Worksite Recognition Program

New Jersey Breastfeeding-Friendly

Worksite Recognition Program

New Jersey Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplaces have made accommodations to support breastfeeding mothers as employees. This can be as simple as allowing employees to have flexible breaks and access to a private room for expressing milk or nursing. The room needs to have a comfortable chair and a lock on the door. *Minimum criteria for receiving this recognition are:

  1. All lactating employees are allowed reasonable breaks to express milk or nurse their children.
  2. All lactating employees have access to a private space for expressing milk or nursing. The space is not a bathroom. The space is lockable and shielded from view. The space has an electrical outlet.

Supportive policies and practices that enable women to successfully return to work and breastfeed send a message to all employees that breastfeeding is valued. Workplace support is a temporary need for each breastfeeding employee.  Once babies begin eating solid foods at 6 months, milk expression requirements gradually diminish.

Easy Application Process

Applying for the New Jersey Breastfeeding-Friendly Worksite Recognition Program is easy!

  1. Complete the on-line self-assessment/application see below or click HERE
  2. Take a snapshot of the worksite’s lactation room and send copy of image to NJBreastfeedingCoalition@gmail.com

A NJ Breastfeeding Coalition representative will contact you to let you know your self- assessment/application and picture was received. Applications are reviewed quarterly and newly approved worksites will be listed on our website as a New Jersey Breastfeeding-Friendly Worksite. Your worksite will also receive a formal letter of recognition, suitable for framing, to let employees and patrons know of your valued efforts.

Disclaimer:
NJBC Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite Recognition does not imply an endorsement of all policies and practices of any recognized Worksite or Employer.  Sites recognized have demonstrated at least 2 required criteria in the development of their Worksite lactation support initiatives.

Breastfeeding is Important

Breastfeeding and human milk are the normative standards for infant feeding and nutrition. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, with continuation of breastfeeding for 1 year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant.

Medications and Breastfeeding

Many breastfeeding women are wrongly advised to stop taking necessary medications or to discontinue nursing because of potential harmful effects on their infants. There are few medications that are “not safe” when breastfeeding. Ask your local lactation consultant then consult with your healthcare provider.
