The categories of providers include:
International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs)
IBCLCs are highly trained and certified experts in breastfeeding and lactation support. They help families resolve breastfeeding challenges such as latching issues, low milk supply, breast pump flange sizing, pain during nursing, and more. They may work in hospitals, clinics, or WIC, but nearly all listed in Zipmilk.org are in private practice, conducting visits in their office, client’s home, or online, via telehealth
- Training and Education: IBCLCs undergo rigorous education, clinical experience (300–1,000 hours, depending on which pathway they choose), and pass an international certification exam.
- Scope of Practice: They are considered the gold standard in lactation care, qualified to handle complex breastfeeding challenges such as tongue ties, preterm infants, low milk supply, or medical conditions.
Settings: Often work in hospitals, clinics, or private practice, collaborating with healthcare teams.
Breastfeeding Counselors and Educators
They provide very foundational breastfeeding support and education. They assist with common breastfeeding concerns and focus on helping parents achieve their personal feeding goals. They are not clinical providers.
- Education: Counselors and educators complete a shorter certification program (typically 20-55 hours, depending on the program) focusing on foundational breastfeeding support.
- Scope of Practice: They provide education and assistance for common breastfeeding concerns but refer families to an IBCLC for more complex cases.
Settings: Commonly found in community programs, peer support roles, or public health initiatives.
WIC Breastfeeding Support
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) offers breastfeeding education, resources, and peer counseling to low-income families, supporting their health and nutrition needs. All NJ WIC offices are staffed breastfeeding peer counselors (mothers who have breastfed and received training to support other parents) to offer encouragement, share personal experiences, and provide guidance for common breastfeeding situations. WIC also staffs IBCLCs for more complex cases, all at no charge for WIC participants. Learn more.
Breastfeeding Support Groups and Organizations
Groups like La Leche League, Chocolate Milk Cafe, Sistahs Who Breastfeed, and community-based organizations provide ongoing emotional support, education, and peer-to-peer assistance to breastfeeding families in a group setting.
Medical Professionals
Pediatricians and family doctors monitor infant growth, nutrition, and overall health. Some have additional training to support breastfeeding families, particularly with weight gain or milk supply concerns.
Free Community Breastfeeding Support Counselors
Free breastfeeding support groups provide a welcoming space for parents to connect, share experiences, and receive encouragement. Led by lactation professionals or trained peers, they offer guidance and support for common breastfeeding challenges in a community setting.
